Doctorate at the Institute of the History of Pharmacy and Medicine in Marburg

Our institute offers the opportunity to complete a postgraduate qualification programme. Participation in the programme, which is planned as a Master's course in the future, is intended to lay the foundation for high-quality dissertations in the field of the history of pharmacy, the history of medicine and the (natural) history of science.

Target groups:
 - graduates of the pharmacy degree programme,
 - graduates and students (after passing the Physikum) of medicine or
 - graduates of other natural and life sciences disciplines (state examination/licence to practise, diploma, master's degree).

Duration of the programme: two semesters.

Start of the next course: October 2025 (winter semester).

Max. Number of participants: 15.

Lecture times: Wednesdays from 2 pm and Thursdays all day in presence.

Requirements: active participation with exercises, presentations and homework.

We offer: introductions to all relevant methodological and theoretical principles for successfully writing a dissertation based on humanities/cultural studies. In addition, we provide you with an overview of the research fields of the history of pharmacy, medicine, natural sciences and science in the context of lectures.

After completing the programme, participants with over-average performance will be given the chance to complete a doctorate at our institute. Supervision in the field of pharmacy (title granted: Dr. rer. nat.) is provided by Prof Dr Tanja Pommerening, Prof Dr Sabine Anagnostou, Prof Dr Axel Helmstädter and Prof Dr Maike Rotzoll. Supervision in the field of medicine (title granted: Dr. med.) and dentistry (title granted: Dr. dent.) is provided by Prof Dr Maike Rotzoll and Prof Dr Tanja Pommerening. The actual work on the dissertation follows the qualification programme and can also take place externally, accompanied by regular supervision meetings and colloquia.
