Ecology as well as basic and applied conservation science, major focus on ornithology (birds of prey, songbirds) and temperate forest ecosystems

I am interested in fundamental ecological questions as well as applied conservation issues mainly focussing on ornithological topics. In my work I combine classical methods of field ornithology with modern techniques of movement ecology as well as laboratory approaches of stress physiology, population genetics and parasitology to study populations and species communities and to evaluate observed  patterns under conservation aspects. Previous work ranges from  sampling of young ravens (Corvus corax) in their eyries to analyse genetic patterns, the capture and GPS tagging of red kites (Milvus milvus) to perform land use analyses, the non-invasive use of faeces samples of capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), hazel grouse (Tetrastes bonasia) or ravens to determine population sizes, and the telemetry of forest bird species to understand food webs.

Within teaching activities I aim to get my experience in ornithology and my fascination for wildlife across to biology students. My aim is to combine both, teaching the fundamentals on ecology as well as practical skills such as species determination and conservation practice knowledge. I use the numberous ornithological examples to get the various aspects of conservation in the context of agriculture, forestry or climate change across to students. In both, the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes I offer teaching units with seminars, practical exercises and excursions in the surroundings of Marburg. I also contribute my knowledge on ecosystems and species communities within excursions to the Bavarian Forest, eastern Poland and southern France.

I am linked through a network of scientific cooperation with other ornithological projects throughout Europe. Furthermore, the strong cooperation with regional and local nature conservation organisations (NGOs) are a very enriching part of the daily research and teaching work.
