Welcome to the Schmeck Lab - Lung Inflammation & Infection

Respiratory infections and chronic lung diseases cause many deaths worldwide, heavily impacting society. Challenges include aging populations, rising antimicrobial resistance, poverty, conflict, and climate change.

Our objective is to elucidate the underlying mechanisms to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions such as pneumonia, sepsis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

We are an interdisciplinary team comprising clinicians, basic researchers, and computer scientists, affiliated with the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) and the German Center for Infectious Diseases Research (DZIF), in addition to two graduate schools: The International Max-Planck Research School terMIC and MBML – Molecular Biology and Medicine of the Lung.
