Studies on the role of virus activation by host cell proteases in species transmission and adaptation to a new host
To date, little research has been done to determine which cellular proteases activate the envelope proteins of influenza viruses and coronaviruses in other species, such as bats, hoofed animals, pigs, or birds that serve as virus reservoirs or intermediate hosts. It is also unknown whether the transmission of influenza or coronaviruses to another host species requires adaptation to a new protease repertoire. These are the questions we are addressing in our research.
