Characterization of the "virus activating" protease TMPRSS2 and its physiological function

Inhibition of TMPRSS2 has emerged as a promising new target for the treatment of influenza virus and coronavirus infections. However, the physiological role of TMPRSS2 is unknown. Using TMPRSS2-deficient mouse models as well as knockdown of TMPRSS2 expression in human cells, we are investigating potential functions of TMPRSS2.
