Biostatistics and Clinical Epidemiology

Course-no. LV20-d17-001 (Lecture) und LV20-d17-002 (Seminar)

Compulsory interdisciplinary module as part of the master’s degree programme Human Biology (Biomedical Science)

Basis module

Courses only in the winter term

Teaching Contents:

  • Basic principles of inferential statistics (point and interval estimation of distribution parameters, statistical tests, sample size planning, multiple testing)
  • Parametric and non-parametric inferential statistical methods for one- and two-sample problems with dichotomous and metric measures
  • A selection of more complex statistical methods (survival time analysis, regression models)
  • Fundamentals of clinical epidemiology (metrics for evaluating diagnostic markers, therapeutic interventions, and quantifying health risks, as well as statistical estimation and testing procedures, methodology of analytical clinical-epidemiological studies)
  • Introduction to the programming language R

Qualification Goals:

Understanding of basics and principles of statistical conclusions, learning how to apply methods for statistical data analysis and study planning, drawing appropriate conclusions from the results of such statistical analyses and being able to formulate them, gaining knowledge of typical sources of systematic errors in analytical clinical studies and being able to apply this knowledge to assess the validity of study results, gaining knowledge to avoid systematic errors and being able to apply them when planning studies.
