Measurement of symptoms in Parkinson's disease by Wearables

The increased use of mobile devices such as mobile phones and smartwatches in recent years has brought us closer to answering an important question in the care of people with Parkinson's disease (or other movement disorders). The question is: how is the patient actually doing at home between visits to the doctor? Patient reports and diaries are currently the tools of choice to answer this question. Unfortunately, these are often incomplete and biased. In our department, we are therefore looking for ways to answer this question objectively using mobile sensors, such as those found in mobile phones or smartwatches.

The proposed work involves the analysis of an existing dataset of sensor data, clinical measurements and diary entries from Parkinson's patients. The aim will be to relate objectively recorded sensor readings to clinically recorded mobility and, where appropriate, other non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

As the focus of the work is on data analysis, an affinity with numbers and data is desirable. Work on this topic will require learning the basics of a programming language (R or Python) if not already available. We will of course support the successful candidate in this.
