Module KM0 Fundamentals of biochemistry, molecular biology, and human genetics
Lectures and practical training sessions for Module KM0 are organized and presented via collaboration between scientists from the fields of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Human Genetics.
The Module delivers the following content:
Knowledge
• Structure and function of the basic biomolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, and nucleic acids), and of complex macromolecules: peptides, proteins, membranes, glycoproteins / lipids; DNA and RNA
• Fundamentals of transcription and translation
• Gene and chromosome structure, genome organization, mutations, inherited diseases, and inheritance, as well as basic knowledge of the structure of genes and genomes and the inheritance of genetic information
Skills
• Students should be able to recognize and name the molecules that are important for (cell) metabolism, and develop a solid understanding of their respective functions.
• They should develop an understanding of genetic issues in research and clinical practice, and acquire basic laboratory skills (practical work with nucleic acids, application of basic microscopic techniques, methods used in cytogenetics and karyotype analysis, etc.).
Competencies
• Master the molecular basics of those aspects of biochemistry, molecular biology, and human genetics required for the respective degree course.
• Promotion of analytical thinking and acquisition of technical terminology.
