Regulation of chromatin function by arginine methylation

Our research focusses on posttranslational modifications by the enzyme family of protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs). Arginine methylation of histones and other chromatin proteins regulates DNA-dependent processes, such as transcription and DNA repair. Similar to other epigenetic regulators, PRMTs are mis-expressed in cancer and other diseases. Therefore we are interested in characterizing
- gene regulatory pathways controlled by PRMTs and their substrates.
- molecular mechanisms, by which arginine methylation affects gene regulation and cross-talks with other epigenetic regulators.
- how the enzymatic activity and the chromatin recruitment of PRMTs is regulated.
- how PRMTs and their methylation substrates contribute to diseases, which show mutation, mis-expression or deregulation of the enzymes.
