The research project on a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) firstly aims at developing a CDSS built on an artificial intelligence-based machine learning approach to guide physicians in their diagnosis an treatment decisions for COPD patients.  Secondly, we establish an integrated research platform for personalized medicine that will empower clinical researchers to explore and test new hypotheses and enable analytical experts to deliver developed intelligent applications for validation and translation into clinical practice.

Considerable new progresses in machine learning methods, diagnostic methods, and treatment options are available, but often associated with high resource requirements and adverse effect risks. Here, we take a novel approach that combines these recent developments with clinical centers of excellence to cross the translational barrier and establish the evidence required for acceptance by patients, medical professionals, and important stake holders (e. g., hospital administrations, health insurance companies, regulatory entities), respectively (compare Research Project Implementation Analysis).

The development of the CDSS allowing a personalized medicine for COPD treatment and prevention is based on BioXMTM, a knowledge management environment that comprises of a project-centered, distributed software platform providing semantic mapping and interoperability of distributed information and knowledge, and the expertise of LabVantage-Biomax GmbH from previous collaborative research projects.
