Workshop "Practical Introduction to XML and Metadata Schemas" on 22 March 2021, 10h-12h
In the field of research data management, reference to XML and cross-disciplinary and discipline-specific metadata schemas is commonplace. However, the application of XML and the use of such metadata schemas is not trivial. Although the sentence "Why don't you use metadata schema X for your data to make your data interoperable?" is likely to be heard frequently in research data management consultations, actual use will probably be rare due to lack of expertise.
This workshop is aimed at people who have had little contact with this topic so far, and is intended to provide a brief but more practically oriented insight into XML and metadata schemas. The following questions will be addressed in this workshop:
- What is XML?
- When and why should I use XML?
- How do I use XML?
- What is a metadata schema?
- How is a metadata schema created?
- How do I apply a metadata schema?
This is done using the example of two "data sets" (a simple drawing and a text document). For the text document, TEI and the DTA basic format will be used. It will also be shown how to look through and use a metadata schema even without prior knowledge of the metadata schema structure.
In addition to the practical introduction, there will be an opportunity for discussion.
