Information about WPA3
WPA3 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 3) was introduced by the Wi-Fi Alliance in 2018 and is a further development of WPA2. The eduroam & UMRnet_staff network only use WPA3 Enterprise, so users are better protected against “brute force” and KRACK attacks. Instead of 128-bit encryption (WPA2), WPA3 has 256-bit encryption and a more complex cryptographic algorithm. In addition, the so-called Protected Management Frames (PMF) secure the exchange of data during the login phase between the device and the WiFi access point.
As WPA2 is disabled, it is important that your devices are compatible with WPA3. With older devices, WPA3 compatibility can often be achieved with a firmware or driver update. Therefore, please check whether and with which firmware your devices support WPA3 and update it if necessary.
The following operating systems should already support WPA3:
- Android 10 and higher
- iOS & iPadOS 13 and higher
- Windows 10 1903 and higher (driver update may be necessary)
- macOS 10.15 and higher
- Linux with wpa supplicant 2.9 and higher
If your device does not have one of the operating systems listed above and therefore does not support WPA3, you will unfortunately not be able to connect to eduroam or UMRnet_staff.
