For a long time, research and policymaking have focused on how violence can be ended and sustainable peace established in the context of civil wars. For example, coming to terms with past violence, reforming the security sector and building legitimate state institutions are considered particularly important in this regard. The Russian-Ukrainian war, but also recent internationalized intra-state wars, raise the question of what we can learn from this research for these types of conflicts and what new perspectives need to be considered.

On the panel, we want to present our research findings, but also new thoughts and European perspectives on the topic area. Then we will discuss which follow-up questions arise from this for questions of peace and security building at the national, regional and international level.

The event is organised by University of Marburg, Center for Conflict Studies, with the support of Justus Liebig University Giessen.
