1. Participation in semester courses at the Language Center
§ 1 Procedure of enrollment
(1) For semester courses, please register online during the specified period. Personal registration is only possible in exceptional cases. You can only register after participating in a placement test or after consulting a member of our staff. This does not apply to beginner courses.
In the beginning of the semester, you will find the current opening hours of the Language Center as well as the set dates for the placement tests and for personal consultations both on the Internet and on notices. Registration must be concluded by the deadline in the second week of the semester.
(2) For personal registration, you must appear in person or send a legally authorized substitute. A substitute may register a maximum of two students.
(3) It is not possible to register by telephone.
(4) After the deadline, registrations can only be considered if places already granted to other participants are rejected (paragraph 3). Punctual registrations are processed first.
§ 2 Class sizes / eligibility of participants
(1) To ensure successful learning, the maximum and minimum size of classes is set. The number of participants should not exceed 20 and not fall short of 10. Additionally, the maximum number may be limited by classroom capacities.
(2) The eligibility of the different status groups is regulated as follows: regular students of Philipps-Universität Marburg (priority 1), guest students and senior students of Philipps-Universität Marburg (priority 2), non-student employees of Philipps-Universität Marburg and students of Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen (priority 3) and non-university members (priority 4).
Guest students and senior students of Philipps-Universität Marburg as well as employees of Philipps-Universität Marburg and students of Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen can register for a course online “with reservations” through the online course program. If these places are needed for regular students, regular students will be given priority. The final decision as to who is granted a place will be made after the registration process has ended.
Non-university members can request to be noted down for course participation by handing in a paper form for registration. These applications will only be considered after those of members of the university.
(3) Lecturers currently teaching at the Sprachenzentrum can themselves participate in courses provided that there are free places.
§ 3 Clearing / Distribution of rejected places
Applicants who have only received a place on the waiting list during registration or who have registered after the deadline can still be admitted to the course of their choice if places are rejected. Such places may become available if originally admitted participants withdraw from the course for well-founded reasons. However, these places cannot be claimed.
§ 4 Class hours
The times for lessons are listed in the current course program.
§ 5 Certificates
In case of regular and successful participation, certificates are issued at the end of the semester. These also specify the amount of points obtained according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Details concerning ETCS points are listed in the course program.
§ 6 Course fees
(1) Course fees are payable upon registration. These include costs for photocopies according to the classes’ needs. The fees are directly debited from your bank account.
(2) You are only entitled to participate in the course after having provided the Language Center with an authorization to directly debit your account.
(3) Lecturers according to section 2, paragraph 3, are exempt from paying the fees.
§ 7 Cancellation of registration and withdrawal from a course
(1) A participant can withdraw from the contract on the grounds of important reasons. Such reasons may be:
- a long-lasting illness, certified by a doctor, preventing the participant from attending the course,
- the student’s leaving the university, confirmed by the university administration,
- proven change of residence making it unreasonably difficult to participate in the course,
- a serious discrepancy between course level and the participant’s previous knowledge, established by the course’s teacher,
- special cases of hardship. A collision with other classes occurring after registration is not recognized as hardship.
Decisions as to which reasons are considered important are made by the managing director.
(2) A reason for withdrawal must be communicated by the second course week at the latest, in the case of special hardship before the first half of the course ends. If the Language Center is not notified in time, a withdrawal is no longer possible.
§ 8 Change of course
(1) In cases of section 7, paragraph 1 (d), it is also possible to change to a different course as far as permitted by the regulations concerning maximum size of class or capacity in terms of section 2, paragraph 1.
(2) The fee is not affected by a change of course. If the fee for the new course exceeds that of the old one by more than € 10, the surplus must be paid additionally. The Language Center will not refund fees if the new course costs under €10 less than the original one.
§ 9 Reimbursement of course fees
(1) Course fees will not be debited or will be refunded if the course does not take place either according to section 2, paragraph 1, or due to the teacher’s or stand-in’s personal incapability.
(2) In case of withdrawal from registration before the course starts, course fees less 30% for administrative charges will be refunded. In exceptional cases according to section 7, paragraph 1, sentence 2 which occur after the course has started, administrative charges amount to 50% of the course fees.
