You need to take a placement test if you have any prior knowledge of the language you would like to study - regardless of how minimal they may seem to you. You also need to take a placement test if you have not taken a language course at the Language Center in the previous semester and do not have an officially recognized proof of language skills. All additional information and placement dates can be found in the section on the particular language.

At the Self-Study Center, a range of materials is available. The assistants will be happy to advise you.
German: Coursebooks, (including sample tests) and CDs or preparing for the B2 and C1 exams of the Goethe Institut as well as for DSH and TestDaF.
English: There is specific practice software for preparing for TOEFL and Cambridge Language Assessment at the Self-Study Center. There are also periodic workshop offerend on the TOEFL test.

This can only be decided by the people in charge of the study program. Please seek out the contact person in your specific department! In order to facilitate recognition, the Language Center indicates the workload for its courses in terms of ECTS points and awards a Bologna grade. It is often the case that only module-like combinations of courses with a minumum of 6 ECTS points can be recognized. In such a case, two related courses must be attended and a graded certificate must be obtained for both.

If you wish to receive credit, you must not miss more than two sessions of a course with one session per week. In cases of justified absences, there may be exceptions to this rule on certain conditions, if no more than 25% of the course was missed.
Inhalt ausklappen Inhalt einklappen Can I obtain ECTS points at the Self-Study Center?
In principle, it is possible to obtain one or two ECTS points by completing demonstrated and checked learning tasts at the Self-Study Center. It is advisable to check in advance with the person in charge of your specific study program about whether these can be recognized. Please also bear in mind that for each ECTS point to be obtained you must prove a completed workload of 30 hours. This is true also for obtaining ECTS points through a tandem, which depends on additional conditions detailed on the Language Tandem Website.
