Graphical representations of data are essential for communicating scientific findings in an abstract yet meaningful, concise, intuitive, and "elegant" way. This workshop equips you with the tools you need to create high-quality and, most importantly, honest graphics that meet the requirements of most academic journals. In this workshop, you will identify some basic perception-based principles for data presentation. You will also learn and practice how to handle and prepare data to produce meaningful graphics.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- You have a better understanding of how presentation affects how we see things (presentation and discussion).
- You are able to generate plots in R (base graphics and grid graphics) (practical exercises).
- You are familiar with two main packages for highly flexible data visualization in R (lattice & ggplot2) and know how to modify the default options of these packages (practical exercises).
- You have even more flexibility using the grid package to create visualizations comprising multiple plots on one page and to manipulate existing plots (practical exercises).
- You know how to save your visualizations in different formats that comply with general standards of most academic journals (practical exercises).
Requirements
Basic knowledge in the usage of R is required. You are further requested to bring a laptop with the latest versions of R and RStudio installed for use in the workshop. If you have technical questions, the instructor will be happy to provide installation assistance.
Proficiency in English at the B2 level of competency is required.
