Projects in science and research are characterized by deliverables such as new findings, methods, or concepts, which should be presented and explained to the public. Competing for funding and resources, managing, supervising, and promoting scientific projects becomes crucial for the success of projects and for attracting partners. Being responsible for multiple projects doubles the challenges of project management. Project managers in academia are often in charge of project management without even having the full authority that comes with being the principal investigator. In this situation, successful project management requires collaborative communication between team members and project partners. The aim of this workshop is to give an overview of the requirements and methods of managing projects.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- You will understand the characteristics of scientific and industrial projects.
- You will be familiar with methods, tools, and basic software packages used in project management: scheduling, division of work; time, cost, and resource planning; traditional versus agile project management.
- You will be aware of how interests, roles, tasks, and the collaboration between team members and partners influence project work and how to productively deal with conflicting demands.
- You will know how to establish communication in collaborative work settings.
