Most of us probably think that we are quite rational beings, but we are all influenced by biases that are often outside our conscious awareness. Unconscious biases are systematic patterns of deviation from rationality that affect the way we search for, evaluate, interpret, judge, use and remember information, as well as the way we make decisions.

In this highly interactive workshop, we will explore where biases come from and what the differences are between biases and prejudices. You will discover your own biases and what your biases say about you.

Together we will reflect what impact unconscious biases have on individuals and organisations, what the benefits of a more diverse, inclusive and bias-aware workplace are. We will discuss examples of biased behaviours, micro indignities, unearned privilege, etc. and how we should challenge such behaviours without blaming or attacking others.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, you will

• Have a clear understanding of what unconscious bias is (and what it isn't).
• Understand the impact of unconscious bias on different areas such as inclusion and diversity.
• Be able to recognize and reflect on unconscious biases and micro indignities.
• Use emotional intelligence basics to create a less biased environment.
• Be able to use proven non-escalating techniques when addressing biases in the workplace.

Lecture, plenary discussions, exercises, group work, individual work

Requirements

Bring an open mind and a curiosity and willingness to learn about your own biases and how to deal with them.

Proficiency in English at the B2 level of competency is required.

The workshop is planned as an in-person event. You are required to comply with the hygiene measures in effect at the time of the event.
