Philipps-Universität Marburg, MARA, F|05, Deutschhausstraße 11+13, Seminar room 01.0010

The seminar is intended for doctoral candidates from abroad who have recently started their doctorate in Marburg. The event is organized by the International Office and MArburg University Research Academy (MARA).

The aim of the first day of the seminar is to give you insight into the structures, characteristics, and peculiarities of the German university and science system. You will be introduced to how to plan a doctorate in the German science system, what good supervision looks like, and how to successfully acquire funding. We will address different paths leading to a doctorate and subject-specific differences specific to the disciplines. Finally, the seminar will outline possible career paths after attaining your doctorate. The second part of the day will provide space for intensive exchange. Individual, pair, and group exercises will encourage reflection on your own motivations for pursuing a doctorate and your personal career goals. Toward the end of the day, you will be familiarized with and apply a form of peer-to-peer counseling in practice.

On the second day, we will continue learning and practicing peer-support techniques and effective communication. In small groups, we will deal with your questions and discuss, for example, how the German culture of supporting doctoral students works. By working in small groups, there will be sufficient space to address your individual concerns so that you can develop solutions and initial steps to meet future challenges.

The workshop aims to prepare you for the challenges you are likely to encounter when pursuing your doctorate.
