Presenting findings from qualitative research does not simply mean to just record the outcomes of the analysis. Instead, it is a process of active construction and representation of the phenomenon under investigation. Thus, the final report should be addressed with careful consideration regarding the following questions:
- How can the final report as a whole be structured?
- What strategies can be helpful in theorizing the empirical findings?
- How to respect a balance of description, interpretation, and analysis?
- How can the depth and richness of qualitative data be preserved and at the same time social structure be depicted (thematic structuring, strategies of case comparison, typology)?
Since there is no one and only style for reporting, answers to these questions must be adapted to the purpose, method, and data quality of the study. Please note that the workshop does not aim at methods of analyzing qualitative data but at ways/styles of presenting the research findings.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- You will be aware of which general methodological questions should be dealt with in a qualitative report.
- You will be familiar with different approaches of giving structure to the results of qualitative studies.
- You will better understand that a good structure depends on the purpose and the kind of qualitative analysis undertaken.
- You will find out what structure might be most appropriate for your own doctoral thesis.
