Poster sessions are an integral part of almost every scientific conference. Their purpose is to highlight research results, visualize them, and stimulate discussion. To draw your audience in, you need a crystal clear message, a text format optimized for readability, and well-chosen graphics. Above all, you need to thoroughly think through how to organize your research content according to the required format. Designing a poster is just half of the story – an effective and compelling presentation is also required to get your message across. This workshop is tailored to the specific needs of graduates and early career scientists and focuses on conveying design and presentation skills and how to apply them for effective science communication.

Part 1 of the workshop covers the main principles of design and layout techniques such as typography, color, proportional balance, visualization, and the use of design grids. Participants will also learn how to conceive and develop a clearly structured poster by reducing the scientific content that it presents to the most significant points.

Part 2 focuses on essential presentation skills, such as conceptual considerations, dramaturgy, and structure, and the main aspects of verbal and nonverbal communication in a virtual setting. The workshop will be rounded off by preparing and practicing pitch presentations, which will be video-recorded and discussed in a feedback session.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • You will be aware that any poster design starts by preparing a concise and clear content structure.
  • You will know how to apply the key elements of design in poster creation.

  • You will have a clear understanding of how design and presentation skills should interact to effectively communicate your scientific work.
