The World-Systems approach, popularized in anthropology by Eric Wolf and Jonathan Friedman, offers a wide-ranging theoretical framework and research tradition on the impact of long-term structures of global capitalism on local contexts. Drawing upon examples from their respective research areas, the presenters argue for the continuing relevance of a comprehensive historical-materialist approach in anthropology for studying the interrelations of economic and social processes within the present transformation of the post-war global order.
