"Let AI do your research?!"

The Scientists' Day took place on 4 June 2024. The focus was on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) and its use, its effects and its opportunities and potential problems for (own) research.

The Scientists' Day offered the opportunity to explore the opportunities and risks of integrating AI into (one's own) research work. The approximately 120 participants were able to find out about and discuss artificial intelligence in three formats.

Around ten projects presented their use and handling of AI in the foyer of SYNMIKRO's research building on the Lahnberge. These included the use of AI in teaching, image analysis and medicine. For example, the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine offered the opportunity to immerse oneself in the human body using VR glasses - which was extensively tested.

Every transformation brings challenges. In her keynote "AI - A Game Changer for Science?", AI researcher Prof Christin Seifert explored the question of what impact artificial intelligence will have on the research process. Finally, a panel discussion with her and Prof Dr Gert Bange, Vice President for Research, Dr Georg Hochberg, Junior Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and Leonie Groblewski, Research Associate in the DFG-SPP "The Digital Image", addressed the future challenges posed by AI. The discussion centred on ethical considerations, data protection concerns and potential prejudices in connection with the use of AI in research, as well as the question of what a suitable methodology could look like to validate AI output.

The scientists' day ended in fine weather in the "beer garden" set up for the occasion.

At last, the scientists' day ended in a sunny atmosphere and the opportunity for further discussion and networking in the specially set up "beer garden".

Programme

15.30-16.30: Registration, coffee & exchange in the SYNMIKRO foyer

Get-in-touch with AI at the UMR: Various working groups present their work and experiences with AI. Find out more about the topic of "AI in research" from various contact persons at our information tables.

16.30-18.00: Keynote and panel discussion - SYNMIKRO lecture room

After a keynote “AI — A Game Changer for Science?” by Prof Dr Christin Seifert, first hessian.AI professor at Philipps University Marburg, she and Prof Dr Gert Bange, Vice President for Research, Dr Georg Hochberg, junior research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and Leonie Groblewski, research associate in the DFG-SPP "The Digital Image", discuss the topic "Let AI do your research!?". The panel discussion was moderated by Stefan Schulte (MCDCI).

Afterwards: Get-together in a beer garden atmosphere

Afterwards, be invited to a get-together in a beer garden atmosphere in SYNMIKRO's courtyard. Take the opportunity to meet new people and exchange ideas.
