The topic of security is not only highly topical, but also has a historical dimension - this is the basic assumption of the Collaborative Research Center 138 "Dynamics of Security". Eckert Conze has been researching the history of security for many years and is one of the founders of historical security research. With the volume "History of Security" he has now published a problem-oriented introduction to this young field of research.

Linking political, societal, and sociocultural developments as well as historiographical trends, he addresses the reasons for the growing interest of historians in the topic of security. He introduces new approaches to security research, such as the concepts of "security culture," "security dispositif," and "securitization," unfolds them with concrete examples, and questions them for their analytical potential. In doing so, he discusses the usefulness of theoretical approaches and builds bridges to related research areas such as risk, prevention, and threat research.
