01.02.2025 The CRC "Dynamics of Security" welcomes Visiting Fellow İlkay Yılmaz!
İlkay is a historian with expertise in the late Ottoman Empire. Currently, she serves as a DFG-funded research associate at the Friedrich-Meinecke-Institut of Freie Universität Berlin. Previously, she was an Einstein Fellow at the same department. Her academic journey includes positions such as assistant professor at Istanbul University and research fellowships at leading institutions, including the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient and the "Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe" (EUME) program.
Her research delves into critical themes such as state formation, comparative empires, the history of passports, security policies, and the history of violence. She has published extensively, including the book Ottoman Passports: Security and Geographical Mobility (1876–1908). Currently, she is authoring her second book, which explores Ottoman and Turkish security practices in the Eastern Provinces of Anatolia from 1878 to 1952.
İlkay will stay at the CRC 138 from February to the end of July 2025.
