Security and urban space in London and Hamburg from the 1880s to the 1980s

2. Funding period (2018-2021)

The sub-project examines how social tensions and conflicts in London and Hamburg affected the transmission and transformation of various security heuristics and repertoires from a synchronic and diachronic comparative perspective. To this end, two key phases - the 1880s and 1890s and the 1960s to 1980s - are analyzed, which from both a contemporary and a historiographical perspective are generally described on the one hand as situations of social upheaval and on the other as times of urban crisis. The urban-historical perspective opens up the possibility of tracing the interplay of competing concepts of security in a differentiated way.
