The Biomedical Science bachelor's program offered by the Department of Medicine qualifies students for scientific and practical work in the field of biomedical basic research in medicine. During the first semester, the necessary fundamentals are taught through scientific modules (Mathematics and Physics, Molecular Fundamentals) and discipline-specific core modules (Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, among others). In addition, additional medically relevant instruction content is incorporated into the curriculum in later semesters (e.g. in-depth courses in Neurology, Pathology, Molecular Imaging, etc.)

Major topics

During the program, students specialize in one of the four major topics of Immune and Infection Biology, Neurobiology, Tumor Biology or Cell Biology.

Objectives

Because the program primarily imparts skills and competencies in the area of research and laboratory work, it particularly qualifies you for work

  • in the academic environment
  • in research institutes
  • in the pharmaceutical industry or
  • in the research-oriented private economy (e.g. biotech companies).

The practical module provided during the program can give you insight into possible fields of work in the aforementioned institutions. Although the bachelor's program is a complete course of study and qualifies students for professional work, a master's degree is frequently required in research-oriented institutions.
