In this minor subject, you will acquire the ability to explain and discuss key structures and processes of modern history. Studying various kinds of primary source (textual sources, oral sources, picture sources, digital sources) will also give you the ability to critically examine sources and to develop a differentiated view point. You will develop a historical awareness and will be able to put current problems into a historical context in an interdisciplinary way. Due to the complexity of historical work, you will acquire skills that can also be used away from the course.
Prospects
Due to the epoch-spanning expertise that you will acquire, completion of the minor subject will open up career options in areas in which additional history skills are desired, especially relating to the modern era. These include the museum and exhibition sector with a focus on the modern era, the education sector (adult education, continuing education), the media, public relations (journalism), the publishing sector incl. e-publishing, the library sector, archiving and public administration, organisational, consulting and management work at international institutions and organisations, the government administration, cultural and commercial sectors, and the IT sector. After a qualified B.A. degree with the minor subject “Modern History”, graduates have the opportunity to switch to a history-focussed M.A. degree programme, after which further prospects will open up.
A minor subject will help you to extend your professional qualifications profile, which is decisively shaped by the choice of your major subject. In conjunction with your major subject, your relevant work experience (e.g. internships, part-time jobs, voluntary work) and your personal skills, it will enable you to refine your profile and carve out your own individual array of career options.
