In this major subject, you will receive an intensive literary, cultural and practical linguistic education in American and Canadian Studies. Use literary textual and media analysis and cultural theory approaches to understand the interplay of literature, culture, history and medicine and to develop a critical view of contemporary North American cultural political developments such as populism, ethnic and cultural diversity or questions of gender politics. You will also improve your English skills.
Prospects
The course will open up a number of professional fields and master’s degree programmes to you, which require not only linguistic skills and cultural knowledge of the United States of America and, to some extent, Canada, but also technological expertise as well as networked thinking and communication skills. During your studies, you will develop teamwork, discussion and media skills. A stay abroad will make you a competitive expert in English-language cultures on the international labour market.
The acquired skills will enable you to work in academia, publishing, the media, web technologies, PR, teaching jobs in business and industry, human resources, advertising, politics, trade and commerce, and consulting. Special professional fields include cultural work in embassies, science ministries, knowledge management, project management, content marketing, the library sector, migration counselling and international offices.
The choice of your major subject will decisively shape your professional qualifications profile. In conjunction with one or two minor subjects, your relevant work experience (e.g. internships, part-time jobs, voluntary work) and your personal skills, it will enable you to refine your profile and carve out your own individual array of career options.
