How is religion changing and how does it influence politics or the economy? Explore the role of religion in society through texts, images, objects and even architecture and films. The Study of Religion minor teaches students the content-related, methodological and theoretical foundations for understanding the diversity of religious cultures within the framework of religious studies.
The content focuses on religious plurality in different regions of the world, the tangible culture of religions, the significance of religion as a social factor, the transformation of religion and the connection between gender and religion.
An integral part of the combined Bachelor's degree is the MarSkills programme, in which you will acquire valuable, future-oriented skills.
Prospects
Students will acquire the following skills within the framework of the Study of Religion course:
- Insight into theoretical, methodological and historical foundations of the subject
- Understanding and analysing religious phenomena in the context of their socio-historical conditions and transformations
- Critical reflection on religious, cultural, colonial and scientific stereotypes and presuppositions
- Formulation and processing of relevant questions
- Conducting scientific research and developing scientific research perspectives
- Practical skills in scientific work and presentation
Work is possible in the following occupational fields:
- Science (university, research institutions)
- public and private educational and cultural institutions
- international institutions and organisations (e.g. NGOs)
- interreligious and intercultural institutions and migration authorities
- public administration, associations, institutions and organisations where interreligious and intercultural expertise is required
- media, publishing houses and public relations
- Institutions of cultural mediation and journalism
- museums
- as well as many other high-level jobs that require professional research skills and information analysis regarding religion and culture across a range of topics.
A minor subject will help you to extend your professional qualifications profile, which is decisively shaped by the choice of your major subject. In conjunction with your major subject, your relevant work experience (e.g. internships, part-time jobs, voluntary work) and your personal skills, it will enable you to refine your profile and carve out your own individual array of career options.
Admission requirements
Higher education entrance qualification:
General higher education entrance qualification or subject-related higher education entrance qualification1 or advanced technical college entrance qualification or master craftsman's examination as well as comparable qualifications of advanced vocational training or vocationally qualified persons.
1The university decides on the validity of the subject restriction for this subject.
Knowledge and skills specific to the subject to be demonstrated prior to admission:
Knowledge of two foreign languages at B1 level, usually English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic or Japanese.
One of these foreign languages can be Latin or Ancient Greek, in which case the level of Latinum or Graecum must be proven.
If students do not have the required language skills in the second foreign language at level B1, they will only be enrolled on the condition that they provide proof of these skills by the time they re-register semester.
Supplementary subject:
In order to apply or enrol, you must also select a major subject and, depending on the study model, an additional minor subject in the online portal.
