The Master's degree is the degree of a scientific physics education. The 4-semester course of study also grants lateral entrants, in addition to graduates of a 6-semester Bachelor program in physics, an opportunity to obtain a Master's degree in physics. Building on a 3-year natural sciences Bachelor program, students will have the opportunity to deepen their study of general physics in accordance with their level of knowledge. An extensively free elective range in physics allows for the acquiring of additional knowledge in a field of interest of choice, in which you may wish to complete your thesis.
In the profile study area, students can attend modules outside of the disciplinary culture of physics, on the one hand, and get to know the work groups in the department, on the other. This serves for profiling and orientation of students and helps in selecting the field of work in which the research block and the Master's thesis are to be performed.
The cooperation in current research fields of work groups is carried out in the research block. It comprises the work group internship, the research internship and the master's thesis. A central element of the master's program is the master's thesis, in which students acquire the capability for independent research by solving a current problem.
With corresponding demand, it is possible that the course offerings and program achievements can be carried out entirely in the English language.
Major topics
In the free elective range of physics, between three and six modules are chosen from the research fields of the work groups. These can be summarized as the following areas of specialization: biological and statistical physics, advanced experimental physics, advanced theoretical physics, methods of physics, optics and spectroscopy, physics of condensed materials, systems and applications.
Candidates are free to choose their field of work for the Master's thesis, in accordance with the opportunities. Typically, a WG is found independently and a topic is chosen in consultation with the advisors. A selection can be made from a broad range:
- Research activities at the department (astrophysics, biophysics and neurophysics, experimental and theoretical semiconductor physics, physics of complex systems, molecular solid bodies, surface physics, structural and technological research, particle physics)
- Research associations and institutions (Scientific Centre for Material Sciences, special research division (SFB) 1083 Structure and dynamics of internal interfaces, SFB/TRR 135 Cardial mechanisms of perception, post graduate programs, Functionalization of semiconductors and The Brain in Action, LOEWE Center Synmikro, researcher groups and study focus and joint projects.
However, the opportunity is also provided to perform research in external research groups and possibly at companies, naturally in coordination with the department.
Objectives
The Master's program in Physics prepares students for independent work as physicists in business, industry, scientific research institutes and public administration, as well as for a continuing doctorate program.
Experience has shown that the professional fields of a physicist are very broadly diversified and therefore frequently range far into related scientific and other disciplines.
Admission requirements
Required university degree Certification of degree: a) in a subject-relevant Bachelor program in the field of physics or
b) a physics-related course of study
with 180 credits or certification of a comparable domestic or foreign qualifying university diploma.
A course of study is physics-related if at least 60 CP have been achieved in physical subjects, 30 CP of those in the field of modern physics.
The examination board can make admission contingent on additional academic performances and/or examination performances of 30 CP at maximum being produced. In this case, the program can be extended accordingly.
Applicants who have completed a different program than "Physics" in which at least 30 ECTS points were acquired in the subject of Physics must demonstrate fundamental knowledge of physics in an examination interview.Certifications of program-specific knowledge and skills to be submitted prior to admission German skills:
