In the "Gender Studies and Feminist Sciences" minor subject, you will acquire the fundamental knowledge of gender studies and the ability to work scientifically on your own, together with the appropriate methods. This minor course provides knowledge about the basic, central concepts, theories and methods of gender studies. Students are then able to grasp and systematically analyse gender relations throughout history and the present, their justifications, their manifestations, media representations and their changes, as well as the issues, conflicts and inequalities that result from them, through gender critical reflection.
The degree programme also provides the interdisciplinary skills to expand and critically reflect on the knowledge acquired in your main subject through perspectives gained from gender studies. This gives you the opportunity to examine gender studies from the perspective of different disciplines. Social and social sciences, education, exercise and sports science, North American studies, theology and Study of Religion, cultural and literary studies, as well as history are available for you to choose from.
An integral part of the combined Bachelor's degree is the MarSkills programme, in which you will acquire valuable, future-oriented skills.
Prospects
The "Gender Studies and Feminist Sciences" minor qualifies students - depending on the specialisation and combination of subject(s) - for work in the following careers:
- Equality work and anti-discrimination bodies;
- Counselling activities such as women's, men's and family counselling, educational, vocational and career counselling, as well as spiritual counselling and pastoral practice;
- Educational work (e.g. school, children and youth work, adult education);
- Politics and policy advice as well as scientific evaluation of political measures with regard to their impact on gender and equality of opportunity;
- Cultural promotion, media and publishing;
- New demands on the gender awareness of employees are emerging in the public sector, triggered by the EU's commitment to gender equality as a political principle.
As a graduate of the minor subject, you will have all the skills you need.
Gender awareness is required in the field of theology/religion, from pastoral work to the interpretation of religious scriptures. Gender expertise constitutes an overarching issue for religious tradition and its communication in today's society. Gender expertise is also of growing importance in the private sector, especially in management, marketing, human resources and quality assurance.
A minor subject will help you to extend your professional qualifications profile, which is decisively shaped by the choice of your major subject. In conjunction with your major subject, your relevant work experience (e.g. internships, part-time jobs, voluntary work) and your personal skills, it will enable you to refine your profile and carve out your own individual array of career options.
