How can I apply to the University of Marburg as an international applicant?

Which degree courses are held in English?
You can learn which degree courses are instructed in English on the respective degree course website. Click on "admission requirements" at the respective degree course and you can see the language of instruction.
Is my certificate recognized in Germany?

Language skills
How well must I be able to speak German?

How can I participate in a German course?
Language courses are offered by the Central Hessian University Study Preparatory Center or by the Language Center of the University of Marburg. Only the Central Hessian University Study Preparatory Center holds examinations for German language testing for university admissions (DSH).
University enrollment
How does university enrollment work?
Your letter of acceptance will inform you when and where you can register. Please be sure to bring all of the documents indicated on the notice, as registration is otherwise impossible. You will receive your student ID after successful registration. If you're an exchange student, registration can also take place during the orientation program.
How do I pay the semester contribution?
If you participate in our orientation program, you do not have to pay the semester contribution from your home country. You can do this with our help during the orientation program in Marburg. If you do not participate in our orientation program, you must wire the contributions and fees before enrollment.

Please be sure to specify your last name and first name and your matriculation number as applicable as the purpose on your wire transfer (your matriculation number can usually be found on your letter of acceptance). The current semester contribution can be found here. Exchange students pay a contribution discounted by 50 euros.

If you cannot enter the country and have already enrolled, you can exmatriculate again. Use this application to do so.

Semester ticket and bicycle rental service
What is the semester ticket and in what area is it valid?
You need the semester ticket if you want to ride by bus to Marburg. It is printed on the student ID, which you receive after enrollment. The semester ticket is valid from 09/01 to 03/31 in the winter semester and from 03/01 to 09/30 in the summer semester; that is, always one month before the official start of the semester. The semester ticket is valid in the entire RMV region, which not only includes local transportation in Marburg but also many rail routes across Hesse. You can find more information here.
How can I rent a bicycle in Marburg?

Opening a bank account
How can I open a bank account in Marburg?
A passport and an address in Germany is required in order to open an account. You can verify your status as a student by presenting your letter of acceptance or your certificate of study. Those who participate in the orientation program will receive help with opening an account during this program.

Registration of place of residence
How do I register my place of residence?
You must register your place of residence within one week after arriving in Marburg. Even if you move within Germany, you must re-register. You must also de-register your place of residence if you move away from Marburg. You can register or re-register/de-register at the city office. You can find out the hours of the city office and the documents that are required here.

What does the orientation program offer?
The orientation program is designed to make it easier for future students to get started at the Philipps University and in Marburg. You can find more detailed information and the current program here.
Students-account /Internet account
What is the Students-account and when does it become available to me? How can I use the Internet at the university?
The University Computer Center (UCC) automatically sets up free accounts for all students, which are required for use of the university Internet, the PCs at university institutions and for logging on to various portals, such as Ilias and Marvin. You can find all additional information here. New accounts are normally available to applicants several work days after enrollment.
