Support from study assistants
To support students with disabilities, especially students who are blind or low-vision, Philipps-Universität Marburg provides student assistants, who currently work about 130 hours a month.
Duties of study assistants
The duty of study assistants consists mainly of providing assistance services and accompanying students with disabilities to the various libraries at the university or to classes.
The following activities in particular are involved:
- Support doing literature searches, making bibliographies and checking out materials
- Reviewing the selected literature by reading a few pages aloud and skimming
- Properly collecting brief passages onto storage media (mostly in MP3 format)
- Making photocopies or scans of needed passages
- Correcting scanned texts
- Describing figures and illustrations
- Help filling out forms related to the degree program
- Doing Internet research
- Giving general orientation support in buildings at Philipps-Universität Marburg as well as at the Student Union in Marburg
SBS study assistants cannot replace private, individual study assistance. We note that you should apply for study assistance as early as possible.
Our study assistants are happy to pass on their knowledge and experience in the preparation of accessible study materials to private study assistants you may hire. (Appointments for this upon request.)
Office hours of study assistants
Study assistants are available at the following times:
- Monday 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM (in person)
- Tuesday 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM (online)
- Thursday 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM (in person)
- Friday 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM (online)
In-person appointments
A study assistant will be regularly available in person at the central university library at Deutschhausstraße 9 during the indicated office hours, and you do not need to make an appointment. Study assistants can be found in study space no. 1 for students with disabilities. In this room, there is also a computer that is used by the study assistants for Internet research, text editing and digital voice recordings.
Please note the most recent version of applicable rules on hygiene and infection prevention at Philipps-Universität Marburg, which must be followed comprehensively. The study spaces for students with disabilities can be found near the main counter, which is located directly at the main entrance. There, you will also receive the transponders to open and lock the study spaces. In addition, this is where you can find out where the study assistant is if they are currently not in the study space and when they are expected back. The same information will be posted for you in Braille on the door to study space 1.

Personal support (jumper service)
Student assistants are also available to accompany students to departments as a part of our “jumper service,” which does require advance appointments despite the rule above. If you would like to be accompanied to a department or class, call (06421) 28 26039 or send an e-mail as far in advance as possible.
Each semester, 2 jumper appointments are available for each student lasting 4 hours each. We would like to ask all users who are unable to make it to an agreed jumper service appointment on time, or not at all, to let us know immediately by telephone. The procedure is as follows: If the user doesn’t show up by 15 minutes after the agreed time, the jumper service will give us a call.
