"Funding Acknowledgements" make it clear which funding organizations have financially supported the research process or the publishing process of a publication. On the one hand, the author expresses his or her gratitude for this funding. On the other hand, this information helps to relate the research work to funding activities of third-party funding institutions. In many cases, beneficiaries of funding institutions have the obligation to explicitly acknowledge that their research has received funding in a specific, formalised manner.
Research Funding Acknowledgements
In your publication, you should make it clear from which project or third-party funding context ("Research Funding Acknowledgement") it emerged. It is important that the information is accurate so that, for example, the record in databases such as the Web of Science is correct and bibliometric analyses and evaluations based on this are valid.
Inhalt ausklappen Inhalt einklappen Example "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation)"
According to the DFG's Funding Guidelines [Link zu https://www.dfg.de/de/formulare-2-00-246480] (Chapter 13, p. 42), publications must contain the following reference:
- "funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) – project number(s)"
The project number of the referenced project can be found in the approval letter or in the GEPRIS [http://gepris.dfg.de/en] project information system. If a publication refers to more than one project, the project numbers must be separated by semicolons.
Please do not enter the internal reference number ("Geschäftszeichen”, a combination of letters and numbers based on your surname).
Inhalt ausklappen Inhalt einklappen Example "EU funding"
Beneficiaries of the EU's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the Euratom research and training programme 2019-2020 must indicate in the following way that their project has received EU funding:
- "This project has received funding from the [European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme] [European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme] [Euratom research and training programme 2019-2020] under grant agreement No [number]”
Information on funding acknowledgements for other projects funded by the EU since 2021 can be found here.
Publication Funding Acknowledgements
"Publication Funding Acknowledgements" make clear which financial support the authors have received to help cover the costs of the publishing process.
Inhalt ausklappen Inhalt einklappen Example "Open Access Publishing Fund of Philipps-Universität Marburg"
The following Publication Funding Acknowledgement must be used in academic publications that receive a grant from the Open Access Publishing Fund of Marburg University Library:
- "Open access funding provided by the Open Access Publishing Fund of Philipps-Universität Marburg."
Only for open access books:
- If the book content emerged from the context of a research funding by the DFG, the Publication Funding Acknowledgement can be supplemented as follows: "Open access funding provided by the Open Access Publishing Fund of Philipps-Universität Marburg with support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation)."
Inhalt ausklappen Inhalt einklappen Example for other funding organisations such as foundations
In most cases, foundations specify how to mention their support and, for example, whether a logo can or should be used. The "Gerda Henkel Foundation", for example, provides corresponding information and a logo in the general information for applicants and funding recipients. Here is an example of an open access publication that was funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation and a publishing fund.
