Open Access Publishing Fund

With support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), Philipps-Universität Marburg facilitates open access publication funding for Marburg-based scholars. Please note that:

  • Available third-party funding for publishing has to be used with priority. Funding is only possible if the applicant has no means to cover the publication fees through third-party funding (e.g. financial resources for the publication of research results originating from projects funded by the DFG, BMBF, or the EU).
  • Funding for open access articles with article processing charges >2,000 EUR incl. taxes is possible. However, funding is capped at a partial payment of 2,000 EUR incl. taxes. The other part of the bill has to be financed with other funds (e.g. departmental cost centers).
  • The resources of the publishing fund are allotted successively until they are exhausted. The decisive factor is the date of receipt of the application.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The corresponding author must be a member of Philipps-Universität Marburg at the time of publication.
  • The article has to be published in an open access journal adhering to the principles of the "Golden Path", which includes that the articles are freely accessible immediately on publication. The journal must apply strict quality assurance procedures recognized in the respective field of research. Please check if the journal in which you would like to publish is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
  • The article has to be published under an open license, ideally a Creative Commons License (CC-BY).
  • Applicants should provide an ORCID iD.
  • The author has no, or not enough, means from project or third-party funding to cover the publication costs.
  • Publication fees up to 2,000 EUR incl. taxes can be sponsored completely. If the publication fees exceed 2,000 EUR incl. taxes, co-financing is possible. The funding is capped at a partial payment of 2,000 EUR incl. taxes. The applicant has to provide a cost center for the other part of the invoice total.
  • Funding is not possible for articles to be published in so-called hybrid open access journals, i.e. journals which basically operate according to the subscription model but also offer the possibility to publish some open access articles (e.g. Springer OpenChoice).
  • There are special regulations for open access articles in Springer Nature and Wiley Gold Open Access journals. From 2022 on, the publishing fund of Philipps-Universität Marburg only supports these articles with up to 2,000 EUR incl. taxes.
  • If you have received funding from the Marburg University Publishing Fund, please use the following wording for the publication funding acknowledgment: "Open access funding provided by the Open Access Publishing Fund of Philipps-Universität Marburg."

Application

An informal application for financial support from the publishing fund can be submitted using the web form (in German) or via email to the university open access coordinator. It should contain the following information:

  • Name and contact details (faculty, etc.).
  • Title of the article and journal including bibliographic details (volume, issue, pages, and an identifier such as URL, URN, DOI, PubMed-Id, or equivalent.).
  • Invoice document (PDF or equivalent).

Please note:

  • Upload your article onto the publisher’s website, preferably directly from the domain of Philipps-Universität Marburg (very important for articles to be published via BioMed Central!).
  • Use your university email account for communication and correspondence with the publishers.
  • If the German Research Foundation (DFG) eligibility criteria are met, the invoice can be paid directly via the publishing fund. Please do not pay in advance and DO NOT use your private credit card.
  • The address on the invoice should refer to Philipps-Universität Marburg.
  • To secure future funding for open access articles, it is important that your article contains a "research funding acknowledgment".

If you have any further questions, please contact openaccess@ub.uni-marburg.de before publishing! We are happy to check for you whether you are eligible for financial support from the publishing fund.

From 2022 on, it is possible to support a very limited number of books and dissertations published in open access with a commercial publisher. This applies especially if the results to be published come from a research project funded by the DFG. Please contact us in advance to check the terms and conditions incl. the capped sum of funding.

Support of Open Access Monographs

Members of Philipps-Universität Marburg who act as author or first editors and who are responsible for paying the publication fees of an open access monograph published with a commercial publisher are eligible to apply for financial support. Only previously unpublished works can be funded. All parts of the funded work must be permanent, free of charge and accessible worldwide at no cost immediately on publication.

Funding for open access fees are limited to 5.000 EUR incl. taxes per academic monograph/editorial work and to 2.000 EUR incl. taxes per published dissertation thesis. However, the financial resources are limited, so only a few publication projects may be funded. It is advantageous if the research results to be published were connected to a project (funding) of Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

The general terms outlined above are also valid for monographs (e.g. affiliation, third-party funding, partial payement etc.). However, there are many more criteria that have to be met by your publication project and for example by the publisher. Therefore, we strongly advice to get in contact with us in advance.
