Open Access Publishing with Springer
Philipps-Universität Marburg (UMR) participates in the DEAL agreement with Springer Nature, including around 2,.000 hybrid journals ("Open Choice" option) and 500 fully Open Access journals of the brands SpringerOpen and BioMed Central (BMC) including also Nature Communications, Scientific Reports and some npj-journals like npj Aging, npj Quantum Materials and more. However, the proper 67 nature portfolio journals are not part of this DEAL-agreement (e.g. Nature, Nature Plants, Nature Chemistry, …).
Publishing in a hybrid journal (otherwise closed access)
A hybrid journal publishes single articles in open access usually after paying an optional fee. The DEAL contract enables to publish manuscripts open access without paying such a fee. Under the terms of the agreement, corresponding authors of Philipps-Universität Marburg can publish their articles inSpringer’s hybrid journals with immediate open access at no additional cost to the author.
Publishing in fully gold open access journals
In a gold open access journal all articles are published freely available without an embargo, but an article processing charge (APC) has to be paid. Under the terms of the DEAL agreement, corresponding authors of Philipps-Universität Marburg will receive a 20% discount on the list prices for their researchers' publications in most of the fully open access journals (e.g. all BMC-journals are eligible, Nature Communications and Scientific Reports are not).
The APC may be funded partially or fully by the Open Access Publishing Fund up to 2,000 EUR incl. taxes. Available third-party funding for publishing has to be used with priority. If the article is eligible for funding and the APC exceeds 2,000 EUR the applicant has to cover the rest and has to provide a cost center.
To facilitate the discount under the DEAL-agreement, there is a collective invoice administed at the university library. The accounting entry with the cost splitting between fund and cost center of the author will be processed on a quarterly basis.
Article types covered
Article types included in the agreement include the "Research Articles":
- Original Paper - Standard article, generally presenting new results; articles published under this article type may also be referred to as Original Research, Original Article, Original Paper or Research Paper.
- Review Paper - Standard article, interpreting previously published results.
- Brief Communication - Short article submitted for rapid publication that exhibits the same structure as a standard article
