Mobility and Transport

Student Union - Transport Department

The AStA (Student Union) Department for Transport is committed to improving student mobility from an ecological, social and economic perspective. It also organizes mobility services and represents the interests of students. To this end, the department is part of the city's cycling forum and the passenger advisory board at district level. Additionally there is an exchange with the municipal utilities about bus transport.  Furthermore, the Transport Department provides information about news and the use of the Student Ticket for public transport ("Semesterticket") and the bike renting service Nextbike.

Student ticket

Since the fall semester of 2024 the University Marburg Student ticket includes the "Deutschlandticket" (Germany ticket) which allows for unlimited use of public transport in all of Germany. This includes regional trains, buses, and trams. The Germany ticket accessed through the Philipps-University is only available as an electronic ticket, which needs to be downloaded.
For information on how to get your ticket, how to download it, and where and in which forms of transport it is valid please visit the student union's website on transportation.

Additionally students can use their ticket for the ICE (Intercity Express) connection between Kassel-Marburg-Frankfurt-Heidelberg. The student ID, printed on paper, doubles as the ICE ticket.
The electronic Germany ticket can not be used to ride the ICE and the student ID can only be used for the ICE. Again, please check the AStA's website linked above for detailed information on how to use your ticket.

Nextbike

The bike rental system is run in cooperation with the city of Marburg and the municipal utilities. Students can use up to three bikes at the same time, free of charge, for one hour at a time.
The rental system can be used in most other Nextbike cities throughout Germany. Citizens can also use the Nextbikes free of charge for 30 minutes.

Studibus (Rent a Transporter)

Thanks to a cooperation with the car-sharing company Studibus, students have a cheap and easy way to  rent vehicles.

Mobility on Campus & Sustainability

The state of Hesse's government's goal is to convert the public administration's vehicle fleet to alternative drive systems by 2030. From this date, no more vehicles with combustion engines are to be purchased for normal use, with the exception of special applications. A majority of vehicles are already being used by university operations (heating, electricity, ventilation, air conditioning).

The university library has also recently started using a 100% electric bus for transportation. There are 8 charging points across the campus, but these are intended exclusively for use by company vehicles. Additionally there are over 20 pedelecs in use on campus, used by the administration and businesses.

The experience and acceptance by users has been very positive, so nothing stands in the way of further expansion. When an existing vehicle gets replaced, the use of a fully electric version is automatically checked. There are not yet any charging points for employees' vehicles. However, there is growing interest, but implementation is not trivial in terms of connected load, access control and billing.
